Cognia is looking to recruit a lawyer or legal associate to join its team of dynamic young lawyers that will form an integrated part of the contracts negotiation division of a top asset management firm. The role entails drafting and negotiating derivatives agreements and accompanying collateral documentation, repurchase and securities lending agreements (ISDA, CSA, GMRA, GMSLA) together with the required due diligence associated with these agreements (including review of netting, collateral and diligence opinions).
The candidate will be based in Cape Town.
This is a rare opportunity to work as part of an investment bank in Cape Town gaining experience in a niche area.
Law degree from a top South African or UK/ EU based tertiary institution
3-5 years’ post qualification experience at a law firm or in-house legal department (preference will be given to candidates with experience within the banking and finance industry or with prior exposure to derivatives work and asset management)
Desired to have awareness of and experience with related regulatory and legal issues, and communicate effectively
Able to manage a portfolio of multiple ongoing negotiations in a target driven environment
Languages: English – spoken and written (required), French (desired)
Experience drafting and negotiating ISDA master agreements and CSAs desirable
Experience drafting and negotiating GMRA, GMSLA desirable
Very basic knowledge of what the work type entails
Strong desire to be involved in derivatives legal work and be part of and contribute towards the success of a vibrant, hard-working and passionate global team
Awareness of current regulatory changes impacting capital markets advantageous
Required skills include:

- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Commercial, proactive and business-like mind-set
- A good grasp of Microsoft Office applications
- Be comfortable with technological applications, plus a knowledge of legal review platforms will be beneficial

- Risk sensitivity and the ability to know when to escalate an issue
