On December 6th, the winners of each of the red wines categories for the 2012 tastings season, had to compete in a final blind tasting in front of 30 tasters, in the usual TOP12WINES format. All these wines were selected after they finished first in the ranking of their own category, in blind tastings, ranked by wine lovers, against the absolute best wines.

Miles Mossop Max 2008 won the Cabernet Blend categor
y, for wines having more than 50% Cabernet Sauvignon content, and is technically a Bordeaux Blends. Interesting enough, the Bordeaux Blends category was won this year by Tokara Directors Reserve Red 2008, whose winemaker is.... Miles Mossop himself!!

This would somehow make Miles Mossop the favorite red wine winemaker! Congratulations!

The complete results are available online on

and the wines are available for purchase on TOP12WINES STORE

I think we owe a big thank you to the wineries that through Top12Wines have agreed to sponsor the Cap 40 launch event with beautiful exclusive wines!

Just to refresh your memory after the weekend, and in case you particularly fancied one of them, here are the wines you tasted:

Hamilton Russel Chardonnay 2011:

2012 Top12Wines Chardonnay Champion. This Chardonnay has been named a few weeks ago by Wine Spectator, one of the two most influent wine publication in the world, amongst its world's Top500 wines. Indeed it has been ranked 32nd out of 7000 wines tasted in 2012, and best of all the Chardonnays in the world. We also ranked it our best at the Top12Wines tastings this season. You may visit them in Hemel-en-Aarde next time you go to Hermanus, and also try their very famous Pinot Noir.

Mooiplaas Houmoed Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2009:

Mooiplaas is located on the north east side of Stellenbosch and makes an incredibly rich and aromatic chenin blanc, which many of you had the opportunity to appreciate.

These two wines are available on the TOP12WINES STORE on and

On the reds side, you tasted :

Bouchard Finlayson Gapin Peak Pinot Noir 2010

Top12Wines PInot Noir Champion for 2012. A beautiful soft, elegant and silky Pinot Noir from Mr Pinot Noir himself, Peter Finlayson, the pioneer who 20 years ago saw the potential of cool climate Hemel-en-Aarde, close to Hermanus, to produce world class Pinot Noir. I know many enjoyed it! Also wortha visit on your next weekend away in Hermanus.

Marianne Desirade 2004:

Second of the Bordeaux Blend category this year, after Tokara Director's Reserve Red 2008 (winner). Marianne is located on the R44 very close to the R44/N1 Junction. A nice place to stay for weekend in classic farm style, thatch roof mode. But the wines are awesome, and not only this one, Marianne collecting more than 4 wines in the Top5 of the 2012 Top12Wines rankings... Worth a tasting!

Bothe wine are available on TOP12WINES STORE on and on
